Ainsijam
(2022) by Gabriel Aries
My architectural education shapes my approach to sculpture, consistently integrating considerations of surrounding spaces and public elements. A recent commissioned piece for the Tumurun Museum embodies this approach, with its concept deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Solo, where the museum is located. The work draws inspiration from the traditions of Solo’s royal court, including elements of color, material, and the city’s historical openness to European influences.
Each stage of Gabriel Aries' artistic journey reflects a profound exploration that enriches his spiritual life. The piece titled *Ainsijam*signifies harmony was conceived following his Umrah pilgrimage. The design is influenced by the architectural elegance and material beauty found in structures surrounding the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque.
The architectural and interior elegance of the Prophet's Mosque, with its harmony of green, white stone, and brass, symbolizes a profound balance in human relationships, or *Habluminannas*. Through these elements, Aries seeks to convey harmony and balance within diversity—a fundamental lesson drawn from religion, which he believes can be foundational to a balanced life.
Gabriel Aries also emphasizes that every material utilized by humanity retains contemporary relevance, regardless of its historical origins. In exploring materials, one inevitably connects with the history or the lived experiences embedded in each material.
“The balance achieved in the multi-material expressions of this work invites an understanding of beauty previously unknown. Continue to explore, and always seek something new,” Aries encourages.
